The ancient practice of yoga has many health benefits, especially when complementing western medicine and traditional mental health practices. This workshop will include an orientation to yoga philosophy, findings of recent medical research on brain changes due to yoga practice and teach simple seated and standing yoga poses that can be adapted to the clinical setting, NO mat needed. Special attention will be paid to Trauma Sensitive Yoga for survivors of PTSD and Complex Trauma, as well as the benefit of yoga practices to address Compassion Fatigue in Social Workers. The second half of the workshop will address the topic of Pain, touching upon yoga to help common discomfort such as lower back pain and planter’s fasciitis. Finally, “The Mindbody Syndrome” — (chronic pain unresolved by medical interventions) and the help that social workers can offer — will be discussed. All physical activity will be done seated or standing.
