Just as the
terms and concepts for each of the newer generations before us evolves and
changes, so have the terms and concepts within the LGBTQI+ community. Our
clients, young or “young at heart,” face more scrutiny to “identify their
authentic selves,” most without the appropriate understanding and support they
truly deserve from the professional encouraging them to do so. Today, Social
Workers and other Healthcare Providers need a foundational understanding of
SOGI (sexual orientation and gender identity) in addition to a foundational
understanding of the harm done when using outdated, unintentional homophobic or
transphobic language. This presentation will offer a safe place to learn basic
terms and concepts important to this community, offer an opportunity to learn
new and emerging, lesser-known terms and concepts, while offering ample
opportunity for questions. This presentation will also offer case studies and
opportunities to discuss your own questions and experiences from your current
caseloads. This presentation is in recognition of 2023 Pride Month.
