More than ever today with the devastating effects of the current Pandemic, people from all walks of life are asking for techniques to cope with Stress. Social Workers in particular are requesting tips on dealing with stress in the context of Self Care. Self-Care is defined as the “practice of taking action to preserve or improve one’s own health; of taking an active role in protecting one’s own well-being and happiness, in particular during periods of stress.” This presenter’s theory is that “Self- Care” amounts to “tuning- into-oneself”, gaining a sense of “self-awareness”, “self-attunement” and eventually “self- love”. “The body is an incredible source of wisdom, but there has been so much focus on the cognitive processes that many people, including therapists, are quite disconnected from their bodies. An integrative mind-body-spirit approach (such as Yoga) helps us and our clients develop a deeper awareness of themselves on multiple levels of their being, beyond the ego-self.” Salome Raheim, Phd. Professor, School of Social Welfare, University of Albany, SUNY. This workshop will entail an overview of recent medical-neurological research supporting the efficacy for Mind-Body integrated interventions, like Yoga, when applied to Stress, Pain and Trauma conditions. Special attention will be paid to Self-Care practices that can elicit the Parasympathetic Nervous System response to defuse the Stress Response. Participants will have a chance to participate in learning Yogic- breath practices, combined with simple, safe movements adaptable to the home and clinical setting. Participants will be able to experience the first- hand benefits of Yoga practices that may be incorporated into a Pain Prevention and Self-Care plan.
