No matter the
level at which Social Workers may find themselves today - micro, mezzo or macro
– we need a better understanding of the Minority Stress model and the
mechanisms of risk for oppressed populations. Today, Social Workers who are
working with oppressed, stigmatized or underserved populations in any capacity
need to know how to recognize and understand microaggressions and their effects
on our clients, as well as advocating for more access to culturally competent
services. Currently, in addition to affects from chronic stress of a global
pandemic, oppressed or minority population clients continue to navigate the
affects from systemic racism, possibly from our own colleagues or within our
own organizations. This presentation will explore what microaggressions are,
how minority stress continues to affect clients, and ways to adjust treatment
to be more culturally competent. This presentation will use case studies and
allow ample time for questions and discussion.
