This training
will aid mental health providers in working with Muslims and Arab Americans by
providing historical information and connecting it to practical mental health
practices. Topics including bicultural identity, traditions, war, immigration,
refugees, religion and additional belief systems will be covered. Knowledge gained will be on the cultural and
social influences that Muslim and Arab American populations experience that may
negatively impact their mental well-being. Effective coping mechanisms and
tools will be discussed, in particular when Muslim and Arab American clients
are experiencing discrimination, shame, trauma, assimilation and acculturation.
The speaker, who identifies as both Muslim and Arab American, will share
personal experiences about her journey to come to America and navigating a
bi-cultural identity.
